The shot is close enough that you are able to see the sharpness of its leaves, this also means for a more closer look into detail of everything else, including, the guidelines of the petals which are highlighted from sun overhead. The blurred background places better focus on the whole flower.

Not your usual rose, as its well known face is hidden; we are left to see it from behind, a place most do not expect to look at a rose. This creates balance within the pic, showing off both the flower and it's thorns. Seeing it from the back, this is often a look of reflection. What makes his pic interesting is that the sun solely hits the head of the flower while its thorns hide in the dark of its shades. And I'll just point out that it's thorns are the darkest part of the pic, even the leaves are reaching out; symbolic really. Let's say that the sun is the world, the flower is how we present ourselves and the thorns are who we really are inside. That's what I think when I see this.
